Safer by Design

Our challenge was to produce a range of oral / enteral syringes that, by their very design, would prevent dangerous misconnections, and provide clinicians with  highly competent and cost-effective syringes for enteral feeding.

Reverse Luer syringes provide a wide internal tip diameter, which gives a far better flow for the delivery of gravity or bolus feeds. Non-Luer syringes can only deliver gravity feeds very slowly because the feed has to pass through a very narrow syringe port. Some non-luer syringes on the market like the one above, have internal diameters of less than 3mm. Enteralok's internal diameter is over 4mm, one of the largest available.

Reverse Luer syringes also produce lower delivery pressures for medications, whereas oral syringes produce around double the pressure and Non-Luer syringes about 50% higher pressures than Reverse Luer syringes.

Our objectives were achieved by designing a reverse luer lock tip with symmetrical lugs in order to create a firm connection when injecting into a feeding port but that would remain unobtrusive when administering oral medication.

The operation of the device was further distinguished by creating a purple plunger and displaying distinctive ‘Oral / Enteral’ markings on the barrel of the syringe in accordance with NPSA guidelines.

The name ‘Enteralok’ is derived from the Enteral function of the syringe and the type of reverse Luer tip engineered into the device in order to comply with regulations.               In addition, it is OK to use the syringe for Enteral feeding, thus Enteral-ok!
