The past decade has experienced several cases of injury and death due to the maladministration of non-IV fluids. These incidents have occurred because enteral feeding equipment fitted with universal Luer connectors has allowed the inadvertent injection of enteral medication into parenteral lines.

In response to these incidents, in March 2007 the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) issued an important Alert recommending that hospitals ensure that appropriate systems are put in place to minimise errors in the administration of liquid medication. These measures should include the use of enteral feeding systems that do not contain ports that can be connected to intravenous syringes.

Enteralok® is a British-designed reverse Luer Lock enteral syringe specifically developed in response to NPSA recommendations. The use of the Enteralok range of syringes, in place of standard IV syringes, significantly reduces the risk of harm caused by the accidental delivery of enteral feed into parenteral lines.
